For most people that number is the whole story of food: a quantity to be counted, budgeted, feared, or burned off on a treadmill. It is also one of the most misleading figures in all of nutrition, because it tells you only one of the two things food does. Every time you eat, food is doing two jobs at once. Part of it gets burned for energy, and the other part gets built into you: muscle, bone, hormones, and the enzymes running every reaction you've got.
Picture two people who weigh exactly the same, eat exactly the same number of calories, and sleep the same hours. One slowly loses weight over a month. The other doesn't budge. Nothing in a basic calorie calculator can explain that, and yet it happens constantly. Most people carry a mental model of metabolism that looks like the horsepower rating on a car: a fixed number stamped at the factory. That model is comforting, and it's wrong in ways that quietly sabotage almost everyone. The truth is blunter: the body treats a diet as a threat and manages it like one.
Ask most people what estradiol does and you'll hear "it's the female sex hormone." That sentence stacks two errors: the word "the," as if it had one job, and "female," as if men didn't run on it too. Here's the function. Estradiol is a steroid hormone, lipid-soluble, able to cross cell membranes, with a receptor that lives inside the cell and talks directly to DNA. Its receptors come in three flavors: estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), which sit inside the cell, plus a fast-acting membrane receptor called GPER1 (G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1). Because those receptors are scattered across bone, brain, blood vessels, cartilage, and skin, "estradiol's effect" is never one thing. It restrains demolition in bone, coaxes a neuron to sprout connections, and relaxes a blood vessel, each through the receptor mix specific to that tissue.
